The bicycle gang that attacked a BMW in broad daylight in Manhattan first targeted a yellow cab — whose driver was injured when one of the teens tossed a bike at him, The Post has learned.

The youngsters’ two-wheeled terror spree on Tuesday began in Midtown, where they swarmed the taxi on Fifth Avenue near East 29th Street, trying to damage the vehicle around 4 p.m., police sources said on Thursday.

When the cabbie got out to check out the damage, one of the teens threw a bike at his back.

The pack of punks then continued south along Fifth Avenue, encountering Max Torgovnick’s BMW SUV at a red light at East 21st Street, where one of the bikers rear-ended the car.

Torgovnick continued onto East 20th and that’s when he was surrounded by dozens of the youths, who pounced on the hood of his car and kicked in the windshield as the 36-year-old driver and his elderly mom watched in horror.

Sources said the teens broke off the side-view mirrors of the SUV and punched the windows.

Torgovnick told The Post on Wednesday that the group was yanking on the door handles screaming, “Get out! Get out!”

“It’s something that I never expected to happen in New York City,” said Torgovnick, a lifelong city resident. “That’s something like you would see on the streets of a war zone. I never thought New York would get this bad.”

Neither Torgovnick — who managed to drive a few blocks to safety — nor his mother were injured.

One arrest has been made so far — a 15-year-old boy who was charged as a juvenile with criminal mischief and rioting on Wednesday, sources said.

Police are also looking for another teen who they’ve identified.

The cab driver refused medical attention at the scene, sources said.
