Following the appointment of David Cameron as Foreign Secretary on Monday, there have been calls for the former prime minister to clarify his position on Brexit.
In 2016 Mr Cameron campaigned to remain in the European Union, vacating his position as PM after losing to Vote Leave.
Three years later Mr Cameron told the BBC he didn’t regret calling a referendum, telling reporters: “I don’t regret calling the referendum. It was a promise I made two years before the 2015 general election — it was included in the manifesto, it was legislated for in parliament — six out of seven members of all parties voted for that referendum.”
And now back on the front lines of British politics, some have been calling for a clarification on where the former PM stands.
Among these is Sir John Redwood, who has urged Lord Cameron to make clear he now believes in Brexit.
In a post on X, formerly Twitter, the Wokingham MP said: “David Cameron should reassure that he supports the 2019 manifesto to get Brexit done. He needs to set out how proud he is of the UK now we are free of EU law and taxes.”
Express readers had their say yesterday in a poll which asked whether they backed Mr Cameron’s return as Foreign Secretary.
In total 21,155 people voted with a staggering 18,335 (87 percent) of them saying they did not back the former PM’s return.
Just 2,555 (12 percent) said they did, while 265 (one percent) voters said they didn’t know.
One commenter dubbed Mr Cameron a “retainer plant” while another said it was a “total betrayal of the British people”.
Elsewhere, former Tory donor Peter Cruddas said: “The coup is complete, Remain has won and democracy has lost.”
