Breonna Taylor’s Mom, Tamika Palmer, Marks the One Year Anniversary of Her Daughter’s Death
March 13 marked the one year anniversary of Breonna Taylor’s death. In memory of her daughter, Tamika Palmer spoke to CNN about the ongoing fight for justice in her daughter’s case.
Speaking to CNN‘s Alisyn Camerota on New Day, Palmer explained that in order to feel as though justice had been done, she would need to see “officers arrested, and charged, and convicted” for Taylor’s murder.
Breonna Taylor was shot and killed when police officers entered her apartment on a “no-knock” warrant while she was sleeping. Although some police reforms have taken place since her death, and “no-knock” warrants have been banned in Kentucky, Breonna’s mother wants more to be done. “They don’t help Breonna,” she told CNN. “But the goal is for there not to be another Breonna so you know their steps moving forward to make sure, hopefully, ensure this won’t happen again.”
Palmer called her daughter’s murder “still unbelievable” a year later, and said she feels “definitely anger, just anger that the way this whole thing happened, anger that it was so avoidable, and anger that she lost her life for it.” Palmer also noted that she was still waiting for an explanation from the Louisville Police regarding how Taylor’s death happened. “At this point I don’t really know what they could say, like you’ve avoided me for a year, and I don’t know what it would do at this point.”
As noted by CNN, Lonita Baker, the family attorney, “said a settlement of $12 million from the Louisville police department received by the family, while holding the City and Police force accountable, ‘does not hold the officers responsible for Breonna’s murder accountable.'”
