A Hawaii resort went into an hours-long lockdown early Sunday after a hotel guest — believed to be a local military man — started firing through his door at staff, according to police.

Hundreds of people were evacuated from the immediate area around the Kahala Hotel & Resort in Honolulu from late Saturday, with many huddling in a makeshift safety room in a ballroom, according to local reports.

Police also cleared the beaches and beachfront eateries after the first shot around 6 p.m. Saturday through fears that the gunman could fire from his hotel balcony, officials told Hawaii News Now.

The suspect is believed to be a member of the Navy who lives on Oahu, and his military commander responded to the scene, where members of his family were also assisting police, the outlet said.

Police say he first fired through his door when hotel security staff went up and knocked on his door. It was not immediately clear what led them to go to his room.

“Thankfully, the security guard wasn’t standing in front of the door,” Honolulu police Capt. Brian Lynch told Hawaii News Now.

After that first shot, he later fired through the door multiple times as officers in the hallway called his name, with at least five shots fired, police told the outlet.

Negotiators continued to try to end the stand-off early Sunday.

“Nobody is injured. Everybody is accounted for,” Lynch told reporters at the scene. “We’re just waiting for the suspect to give up.”

The suspect is believed to have been staying at the resort with family members, all of whom were in a safe place and not with him as he remained barricaded inside the room, officials told KITV4.

The Kahala Hotel & Resort told the station that “security personnel and law enforcement have evacuated guests and employees from the immediate area and everyone is sheltering in place.”

“We ask that the public refrain from entering the area surrounding the hotel at this time,” the resort said in a statement.

Staff handed out food, blankets and pillows to those forced to bunker down in either a ballroom or the lobby, Hawaii News Now said.
