Floods and thunderstorms are slamming Southern England, following a record heatwave, according to reports.

In Hampshire, lightning destroyed homes overnight, causing a pensioner to flee.

“There was this enormous bang, it was obviously the lightning, I think it woke the rest of the street up,” neighbour Barrie Austen said, according to The Sun. “I saw the flickering and when I looked out I saw the roof of the semi-detached house completely ablaze and it had completely gone.”

Storm warnings have been put in place through the weekend — with winds as strong as 55 miles per hour. Flood warnings are in place through Sunday morning.

The UK’s national weather service, the Met Office, issued a “yellow” warning across much of England and Wales. The agency warned that some communities might be cut off if roads flood. It also warned of power outages.

Farther north, outside Manchester, a fallen tree forced tram passengers to disembark and walk through the rain, according to another report.

“We just had to walk. They didn’t tell us if the tram tracks were live; there was a thunderstorm and a tree was brought down onto the track and we were walking on the track,” a passenger said. “How no one got injured is beyond me.”
