Why is 'is Ted Cruz the Zodiac Killer' trending?

SOME 52 years after the Zodiac Killer started his murder spree, a team of investigators believe they've cracked the case.

The finger has been pointed at Gary Poste – not Texas rep Ted Cruz as memes would have you believe.

Why is 'Is Ted Cruz the Zodiac Killer?' trending?

Questions about whether Ted Cruz is the Zodiac Killer have been trending after the Case Breakers revealed who they believe to be the true Zodiac Killer.

In around 2015 and 2016, the internet was rife with memes suggesting the politician was in fact the killer.

Now that the Zodiac's identity appears to have been uncovered as Poste, who died in 2018, social media users are poking fun at the idea he lived long enough to see the memes.

"Can’t believe the Zodiac Killer lived long enough to see the Ted Cruz memes," one tweeted.

Others, however, have decided to stick with the long running joke accusing Cruz of being the killer.

One user wrote: "Isn't it strange how we have never seen Gary Francis Poste and Ted Cruz in the same place at once?"

Another added: "Don’t let them deceive you: Ted Cruz is still the Zodiac Killer."

A third shared a picture of Spongebob Squarepants edited to mimic Cruz sighing in relief with the caption: "Ted Cruz rn after framing Gary Francis Poste as the zodiac killer".

Why do people think Ted Cruz is the Zodiac Killer?

Considering the Zodiac's first known murder was in 1968 and Cruz wasn't born until 1970, people don't actually think he's the killer.

It was simply a joke that took the internet by storm as more and more memes were created and shared.

The joke appears to have even originated as far back as 2013, when a Twitter user quipped: "#CPAC Alert: Ted Cruz is speaking!! His speech is titled: 'This Is The Zodiac Speaking'."

National Public Radio wrote that the meme captured "a feeling they have about Cruz: they think he's creepy. And they want to point that out, as clearly as they can".

One Twitter user who helped circulate the meme, Lindsey Martin, told NPR she shared it because it is "so obviously untrue… if there was any way that it could possibly be true I would be scared to joke about it just because of the repercussions".

Cruz himself even acknowledged to the joke in 2018, by posting a cypher like that of the killer's with the text "Happy Halloween".
