5,266 cases of the virus were recorded in South Korea on Wednesday after daily cases rose above 5,000 for the first time, according to The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA).
In response to the Omicron variant, all travellers to South Korea will be required to undertake a 10-day quarantine, starting from Friday, regardless of vaccination status, the KDCA said.
South Korea identified its first five cases of the Omicron variant on Wednesday night, including a fully vaccinated couple who had recently travelled back from Nigeria.

US records first case of Omicron
The US has recorded its first case of the Omicron variant of COVID-19.
The case was found in a fully vaccinated person who had returned to the US from South Africa.
President Joe Biden is expected to announce the US will be tightening restrictions on US travellers wearing masks.
The White House also plans to announce stricter testing for international visitors.
