Bitter Remoaner Colin Firth trades in full British citizenship to become Italian after blasting Brexit

ACTOR Colin Firth is set to become an Italian citizen after hitting out at the Brexit vote.

The Bridget Jones star was furious when the UK voted to leave the EU and has now applied for dual British-Italian citizenship.

A source said: "Colin was horrified by Brexit and is worried about the consequences."

In an interview last year the 56-year-old actor, who played Mark Darcy in the three Bridget Jones films, made his feelings about Brexit clear.

He said: "For me this is a disaster of unexpected proportions. Brexit does not have a single positive aspect. Many colleagues, including Emma Thompson, are, like me, enthusiastic Europeans, and we still cannot believe it."

And he has also told how his British roots are not that strong.

He said in 2010: "I don't feel planted here.

"I feel very connected to America. My mother grew up there and I spent a year in high school in the U.S. Growing up, I felt almost American in lots of ways."

He was a backer of the EU-supporting Liberal Democrats and appeared in a 2010 party political broadcast opposite Nick Clegg.

But the star, who won the Best Actor Oscar for his performance as George VI in The King's Speech, withdrew that support after their U-turn on student tuition fees.
