Teen’s ever first visit to Wetherspoons turns traumatic as skull needs stapling

An 18-year-old teen hoping to enjoy her first night out on the town spent the night in the hospital after being hit in the head by a glass in a Wetherspoons pub.

Emily Browne, from Cardiff, was out on the town celebrating her 18th birthday with friends in Bristol when she was assaulted in the waterfront-based chain pub.

The teen had booked a hotel for her big night on the town, but ended up spending the night alone in A&E.

Police have stated they are investigating the reported assault, which took place in the V-Shed establishment on January 15 at around 10pm, BristolLive report.

Ms Browne, who had to receive two staples to the back of her head as a result of the injury, said: "I was in a lot of pain, it was a really traumatic night.

"It was horrible. I was bleeding so much that by the time they had put the bandage in it was soaked in blood.

"I am suffering form a bit of short-term memory loss now, as well as having headaches and feeling fatigued.

"I am waking up in the night with nightmares. I do not really feel like I am in the moment, I do not feel like myself."

The A-Level student says she was ordering her second drink at the bar when the back of her head went numb.

She believes an item made of glass was thrown from the balcony area, which overlooks the crowd and bar where Browne was stood.

Wetherspoon has said plastic glasses are used at the pub from 7pm on Friday and Saturday.

Brown said the pub couldn't find the incident on CCTV at first, but staff have since reviewed footage and found the assault.

She added that waiting for an ambulance would have taken several hours, so instead she walked to A&E where, due to coronavirus restrictions, had to sit on her own.

The 18-year-old said: "I think the worst part of it is that there was no context to it, there was nothing to provoke it. It was a really horrible assault."

She continued: "There was nothing I could have done to stop it. It was totally unprovoked."

Avon and Somerset Police added that they were investigating the assault, saying: "An item was thrown by an unknown offender, striking the victim's head and causing injury which required hospital treatment."

A Wetherspoons spokesperson said: "We are aware of an incident which too place at the V Shed in Bristol on January 15, where a customer was hit with a plastic glass.

"An ambulance was called by the pub's staff, but they were told it would not be able to attend for some time due to a high number of emergency calls and were advised the customer should attend a nearby medical unit.

"We wish the customer a full and speedy recovery."
