The former Cabinet member explained why he thought there was a “limited time” before things turned around from a wobbly start for the new Prime Minister. Mr Shapps claimed that the Conservative conference speech Ms Truss gave this afternoon was the biggest speech of her life. The former minister for transport told Jon Sopel that the Prime Minister’s next ten days in office were critical. Ms Truss has been facing backlash for her recent announcement of her financial plans for the UK as the country is currently facing a cost of living crisis.

The News Agents presenter said: “So, ten days to save her leadership, is what you seem to be saying?”

Mr Shapps told the News Agents: “I think it’s obvious… It’s a snappy headline John,  but it is obvious to say that there is a limited period of time to turn things around from what has been a choppy difficult start.

“I think these next few days by definition… Obviously, the key moment is one because she’s got a massive conference speech to make.

“Probably the biggest speech of her life, definitely!

Mr Shapps added: “And two, MPs will gather again in Westminster for the first time since these things have been an issue.

“So the next ten days is of course a critical period, that goes without saying.

“It doesn’t mean it’s the end moment, one way or the other, it doesn’t mean the time will stop after ten days.”

Recent polls have shown a slump in Conservative support, and a possible electoral defeat due to the Prime Minister’s recent fiscal statement, as the UK, faces economic challenges.

Ms Truss has been urged to do more to help the most vulnerable in society who are been affected negatively by the ongoing cost of living crisis.

The Prime Minister has been slammed for axing 45p tax cuts for the most wealthy in Britain, and for not doing more to help those who are facing poverty.

Calls for the Government to raise state benefits have still not been answered.

Polling expert Professor John Curtice has warned of a possible defeat for Ms Truss and the Conservative Party in the up and coming elections if things continue to go the way they are.

Discussing Ms Truss’ popularity after her fiscal statement, Mr Curtice told Sky News: “The Labour Party…around 40 per cent of people are thinking its best on the economy, and only around 20 per cent for the Conservatives, and the third element that is in place is serious damage to the popularity of the Prime Minister.

“That is what happened to John Major in 1992, in the case of Liz Truss across the piece of all the polls, her level of unpopularity, you know minus 30 something or other is compatible to the level of unpopularity that Boris Johnson was suffering just before he was brought down as Prime Minister.”

The Prime Minister however received praise from Tory members for her first speech at the party’s Birmingham conference, which also saw Greenpeace protesters cutting her off as she spoke.

FT’s Chief Political Correspondent Jim Pickard said: “Tory party delegates in raptures after Liz Truss speech, telling me it was ‘fantastic’, ‘amazing’ and ‘inspiring’.”
