Grand Designs’ ‘saddest ever’ house worth £10million still not sold 3 months on

An infamous disaster-ridden house dubbed Grand Designs' "saddest ever" has still not been sold after three months on the market.

Edward Short, 52, saw his marriage crumble amid the chaos of years of development hell at the imposing Chesil Cliff House on the cliffs of Croyde, Devon.

And after the Daily Star revealed that fuming locals despised the sight of Short’s property with furious rows over how lighting would impact nearby areas of natural beauty, the property remains unsold.

The issue is so toxic one raging local even said if he won the EuroMillions he would buy the house just to knock it down "for the village's sake".

SinceChannel 4'sGrand Designs first aired, Edward's overly-ambitious plans with problem after problem caused his dreams to crumble with the unlucky bloke being plunged into millions of pounds-worth of debt and his happy marriage to wife Hazel ending.

A series of problematic setbacks including Covid restrictions and issues with temperature-sensitive swimming pool tiling that needed to stay above nine degrees made the project a lot longer and more pricey than had been planned.

Edward admitted to the “stain of failure” impacting his family as he poured cash into the impressive waterfront home, made up of five bedrooms and bathrooms, four reception rooms, a sauna and a cellar.

But despite agents declaring there would be “global interest” in the sale, it is yet to materialise and Edward has still not made back the eye-watering sums of money poured into the project.

He admitted: “I had no idea it would end up costing so much.

“I've accepted now that I'm never going to be able to live in it because I have money I need to pay back.

"It was my overconfidence and arrogance that got me here in the first place so I'm doing what I need to do.”

Unfortunately for Edward even now that the property is finally complete, he will always have a painful reminder of the years of hell he went through with Google Maps immortalising the trauma with a photo of the unfinished building on its website.

The dad-of-two explained where it all went wrong, saying: "We waited over a year for some stuff and there were a number of delays waiting for building materials to arrive – they were headaches and that wait was painful.

"We had the coldest winter weather and it snowed. It has been extraordinary. We had the banking crisis, the Brexit years, which were very hard, the coronavirus pandemic and then the pingdemic.

"This touches all sorts of areas and everything has been slow. We are connected to so many products connected to Europe, the supply chain, problems with the Channel, customs, I could go on writing things that get in the way.

"It's a very long list and sometimes you do feel cursed by it all.

"I cannot make any plans of what I do next until it is sold – but I would be very surprised if they involved any more big-build projects. I think I need a physiatrist and help with PTSD."

When the Daily Star went to visit the notorious property, it was clear to see why Edward had fallen in love with it.

A short car journey around the winding coastal road out of Croyde quickly exposed the beauty of the original plot with a stunning view over the beach from the whitewashed walls of Chesil Cliff.

Our man on the scene met property consultant Nic Chbat from Match Property.co.uk, who explained the home was "a little landmark of a jewel" which is more like the south of France.
