‘Famous’ takeaway gets rave reviews despite inspectors saying it is ‘filthy’
A popular takeaway spot that first opened its doors 30 years ago has been slammed as 'filthy' by inspectors.
The Dutch Pot on Leeds' famous Chapeltown Road was handed a shocking one-star food hygiene rating – the second-lowest possible score – by the council after it was found "major improvements are necessary" to the establishment.
Inspectors said the grilles, floor and ceiling of the "filthy cold room" needed to be cleaned and that the lobby outside the cold room, which had "filthy walls", also had to be "thoroughly" scrubbed following a visit on November 9, 2022, reports LeedsLive.

The restaurant owners were also instructed to clean the "dirty" hand contact points, doors and walk-in freezer and told to clear away the "debris" found on the floor.
The kitchen ceiling was also in need of a clean, while in the first-floor prep room, inspectors wrote that the "walls, ceiling and the floor surfaces are dirty".
Visitors from Leeds County Council found staff were using a food safety handbook from 2008 and had "very poor" hygiene knowledge, with those handling food having had no recent training on the subject.
High-risk foods, meaning foods that are at a greater risk of bacterial growth, were also being defrosted at room temperature, potentially putting customers in danger of developing health issues.
The report may be damning, but that hasn't stopped the Dutch Pot from keeping its doors open since 1993 – and has glowing reviews from many of its loyal customers.
"Can't get better food in Leeds than the now famous 'Dutch Pot' it is goooood," one reviewer wrote.
Another added: "One the best Caribbean spots in Leeds in my opinion. Delicious food and I even get the odd smile nowadays! My go to place for the good stuff!"

A third, giving the restaurant five stars, chimed in: "Beautiful food. Love the Goat Curry. Divine!"
Not everyone has been won over by the eatery, however – some complained that the service and quality of food didn't live up to expectations.
"Food is always cold never get my full order and always charge me full price everytime. the lamb curry has more bones then in meat nd potato are not cooked properly rise and peas ar dry like rubber sometimes waited over 1 hour and 45 minutes to be disappointed again with my food," one person wrote.
"This place is not a true representation of jamaican food nor jamaican hospitality," another chimed in. "Get rid of the burnt n over-salted food n bring in a server that knows how to treat the human race… and a chef that can cook authentic jamaican food [sic]!"
