Harry and Meghan ‘trapped in most golden of handcuffs’ by Netflix, warns expert
Prince Harry has got himself into a tricky dilemma with his Netflix deal, as one of the streaming network’s best-known shows is about to focus on the traumatic event that shaped his life.
In season six of The Crown – Netflix’s fictionalised retelling of Queen Elizabeth II’s life – viewers will see the death of Harry’s mother Princess Diana.
Even though programme-makers have already announced that the drama won’t be showing “the exact moment of the crash impact,” the show will inevitably spark controversy among the public, and upset at the Palace.

But while his brother William will have the freedom to express his personal feelings about having his mother’s tragic accident shown on screen, Harry is unable to bite the hand that feeds.
Now that Harry is no longer being financed by the public purse, he’s dependent on lucrative deals like the one he signed with Netflix.
No matter how he feels about the sight of a mangled Mercedes being used to recreate his mother’s death, there will be little he can say against one of Netflix’s most valuable shows.
As royal expert Daniela Elser puts it: “What that shot of the Mercedes highlights is the degree to which the Sussexes have gotten themselves trapped with the most golden of handcuffs – but handcuffs nonetheless”.

In the past he has defended The Crown, saying, “They don’t pretend to be news. It’s fictional.”
Meghan and Harry signed a five-year, £82million contract with Netflix in September 2020.
The couple agreed to produce documentaries, docuseries, feature films, scripted shows and children's programming. So far they have come up with Harry & Meghan – a two-part documentary about themselves – and a factual series about noted social activists, Live To Lead.
Heart of Invictus, a passion project for Harry, is due later this year.

Pearl, the animated series set to be helmed by Amanda Rynda, was scrapped as part of a massive cull of planned projects at Netflix.
Moving away from their documentary comfort zone, Harry and Meghan reportedly intend to focus on "fictional, scripted content" and serve as executive producers for rom coms and "light-hearted" programmes in future.
But while their initial documentary was a relative hit – topping Netflix’s chart for factual shows – they will have to go a long way to match the huge success of The Crown.
That leaves Harry in a tough spot when it comes to pushing back against any portrayal of that fateful crash in Paris.
