Colorado Star Wars license plate auction to fundraise for disabled people

Colorado leaders launched their second “May-the-4th-Be-With-You” solicitation of Star Wars minions Thursday, declaring they’ll auction off rights to 14 Star Wars-themed green-and-white mountain backdrop state license plates next week – an effort to raise funds for helping people with disabilities.

Bidding began at 8 a.m. in an online auction that runs through 7 p.m. May 11, with bids starting at $100, for these Colorado license plates with letter configurations referring to Star Wars movies — such as AKBAR, CHEWY, MRVADER, OB1WAN, and STARWAR. Proceeds will go to the Colorado Disability Funding Committee, which gives grants to programs that help people, state officials said.

More than 851,000 people in Colorado are living with disabilities and often can use help on tasks such as applying for available benefits.

This is an opportunity for Star Wars aficionados in the state “to bring their galaxy-sized fandom to their earthly vehicle,” Lt. Gov. Dianne Primavera stated in the release.

The auction launched on May 4 last year raised more than $10,000. Rights to a plate saying JEDI sold for $1,600. State officials displayed graphic renditions of the possible license plates. The Colorado governor’s office also has auctioned off marijuana-themed license plates — culminating on April 20, the anniversary of legalization — featuring letter configurations such as BONG, STASH, INDICA, HONEY, and HERB.
