‘Brazen abduction’: New Jersey server taken by group who didn’t pay $70 bill, police say

Police in New Jersey are searching for a group of people they say abducted and attacked a server after she chased the group for not paying their bill.

The group of three men and two women were dining at a Turnersville Nifty Fifty’s about 15 miles south of Philadelphia, on Saturday night. Around 11:15 p.m., the group left without paying a $70 bill, according to Washington Township police. 

As the group was getting into their car, a 20-year-old server went outside to get the group to pay for their food. Police say the server confronted the group, which resulted in her being put in the car as the group drove away. Surveillance video outside the restaurant captured the incident. 

The server, who didn’t have a cellphone with her, was assaulted in the car before she was dropped off on the side of a state highway. She walked from the highway back to the restaurant and called police.

“It’s a brazen abduction, it’s a robbery, it’s a potential kidnapping,” Washington Township Police Chief Patrick Gurcsik told NBC Philadelphia.

The server had bruises on her body and was taken to the hospital, Gurcsik told the station. 

“I believe she’s obviously traumatized,” he said.

Police said they identified the group’s car as a white Dodge Durango. They are asking for help in identifying the suspects.

Nifty Fifty’s said in a statement that staff safety is their top priority and they are working with local authorities to help identify the people in the group. 

“We value our employees and want them to know that no amount of money is worth their lives, nor is it their responsibility. We are sending thoughts and prayers to our employee for a speedy recovery,” the statement said.
