Axie Infinity’s Discord Bot Gets Hacked
On May 18, the Axie Infinity team announced via Twitter that its discord bot Mee6 had undergone a hacking attempt, which resulted in the bot issuing fake mint announcements. The team later explained the whole scenario in detail, highlighting that the hackers manipulated the bot to add permissions to a fake Jiho account, which was later used to issue hoax mint announcements.
1/ There was a compromise of the Mee6 bot which was installed on the main Axie server. The attackers used that bot to add permissions to a fake Jiho account, which then posted a fake announcement about a mint.
The team further informed its users that such announcements have been deleted from the server, adding that users must practice discretion in case they encounter such suspicious statements.
2/ The announcements have been deleted but some users may still see the message until they restart their Discord.
We have removed the Mee6 bot from the server and will never do a surprise mint.
Mee6 is a discord bot that automates messages on command and allows discord servers/communities to automatically send messages to other community member accounts. The bot is used extensively to send periodic reminders/messages and set commands as per users’ choice and preference. The hackers have allegedly manipulated the Mee6 bot permissions while trying to add fake Jiho account credentials.
The Axie team further added that the Mee6 manipulation attempt was not unique considering many crypto projects have undergone similar hacking attempts.
4/ This was not unique to Axie and happened to many servers with the Mee6 bot installed.
In addition to this, the Mee6 team further issued clarifications, adding that they did notice any suspicious activity concerning their bot. The team later took to Twitter to deny hacking allegations, adding they have not suffered any hacking attempts as of late.
