Boris Johnson was ‘Trump-level mad’ on Covid, says Civil Service boss

The head of the civil service has accused ex-prime minister Boris Johnson of “Trump-Bolsonaro levels of mad and dangerous” behaviour on Whatsapp, according to reports.

Boris has been accused of arguing for the end of social distancing in a Whatsapp group chat.

Next week, the Covid 19 inquiry will hear evidence from Dominic Cummings, the Prime Pinister’s former chief advisor, as well as other senior Downing Street figures.

The inquiry is delving into the Government’s handling of the pandemic after numerous complaints.

A cache of WhatsApp messages is expected to be published, including one involving Simon Case, the cabinet secretary.

The exchange, from July 2020, came while Boris was pushing to ease lockdown restrictions and arguing in favour of the end of social distancing and the reopening of society.

But at the time, coronavirus levels were said to be increasing, with a number of other Downing Street figures concerned about the plans to remove social distancing, reports The Times.

In one message Case said that Boris wanted to declare “we’re over Covid”. He said that the approach would be “Trump-Bolsonaro level mad and dangerous”.

The comment was a reference to Donald Trump, who was then the US president, and Jair Bolsonaro, who was then the president of Brazil. Both leaders had dismissed warnings about the dangers of Covid.

Speaking on the Political Currency podcast, George Osborne said the messages “will show people just what a complete nightmare it was” to work in Downing Street during the pandemic and “potentially some things that are going to cause some real problems for individuals who were in charge at the time”.

Pressed for details by his co-host Ed Balls, he said he had to “be careful here because it’s a judicial inquiry”.

But he added: “From what I understand, there are some pretty staggering things that have been said on those WhatsApp messages by not just by Boris Johnson, but key advisers like Dominic Cummings, really, pretty disgusting language and misogynistic language.

“But I think that’s all I can say because I’ve already appeared once before the Covid inquiry and I don’t want to appear again before it.”
