Labour lost the Hartlepool by-election to the Conservatives by a majority of almost 7,000. The area was previously seen as a Labour stronghold and had a Labour MP in Parliament for more than 50 years. Labour held onto the seat in the 2019 general election under Mr Corbyn.

Following the humiliating defeat, and further blows in the local elections, Sir Keir reshuffled his party which saw deputy leader Angela Rayner removed from her role as party chairwoman.

Anneliese Dodds was also sacked as Shadow Chancellor, along with other personnel changes.

Mr Corbyn offered advice to the new Labour leader – who replaced him last year – and said it is “time to learn the lessons of this disaster” and to “develop a vision” that can fix a broken system.

However, Mr Corbyn has been humiliated after social media users pointed out how the former Labour leader led the party to the worst election defeat since 1935

One person said: “Jeremy Corbyn – the leader who lost Labour eighty seats in 2019 – is offering Keir Stamer advice on how to win elections.

“Self-awareness has never been Jezza’s strongest suit.”

David Miliband also hit back at the former Opposition party leader and tweeted: “Jeremy Corbyn telling us how to win today put me right off my Cornflakes.

“He delivered the best result since 1925 – FOR THE TORIES.

“More of that would be madness.

“We won’t be heard until we break with it.”

Another person said: “Bit rich coming from a guy who lost twice.”

Someone else said: “Jeremy, you are honestly the last person in the world who should be offering advice to the Labour Party on how we should win.”

A sixth person mocked: “He led them to their biggest defeat…”

Another added: “Is this meant to be funny?

“The most useless Labour leader ever giving advice on how to change the party for the better.

“I’ve seen it all now.”

Someone else said: “Labour’s biggest loser advising how it can win. Glorious.”

Sir Keir said he takes full responsibilty for Labour’s defeat and said it is “entirely” on him.

He told the Shadow Cabinet: “To be clear, I take responsibility. Nobody else.

“I lead the Labour Party and it is entirely on me.”

Labour lost eight votes across England in the elections last week while the Conservatives saw an increase of 13 new seats.
