EU crisis: Ex-Greek Minister issues warning over Brexit sparking ‘disintegration’ of bloc

Yanis Varoufakis slams EU for ‘insisting’ UK ‘sticks to rules’

The former Greek finance minister lashed out at the bloc after claiming the EU is now “congratulating themselves” following Boris Johnson’s historic Brexit trade deal. The agreement was signed by the Prime Minister on Christmas Eve.

When quizzed on the EU’s reaction to the deal, Mr Varoufakis said they “are congratulating themselves”.

He added: “They are thinking, ‘Oh, now we have gotten rid of the difficult Brits and now we can do stuff’.”

However, he attacked the bloc saying they have “failed to take into account the dynamic process of disintegration has begun”.

Mr Varoufakis went on to claim “both sides lost” in the post-Brexit trade deal.

The rejoiner argued the “moment you split the European Union up you’re going to send up with heavy costs for the weakest citizens on both sides of the British Channel”.

He added the immediate refusal to accept the 2016 referendum result has had a detrimental impact on British society.

Mr Varoufakis said: “Once the referendum was done, the hard rejoiners – people including [Sir] Keir Stamer – shot themselves in the foot by continuing to back a second referendum.”

Adding there was a “major act of disrespect to those who won the referendum”.

While other Member States have seen an increase in demand to leave the bloc, Mr Varoufakis does not think any other countries will leave.

He told LBC: “The worst threat for the European Union is an under the surface, slow deconstruction.

“The greatest fear for the European Union is that it’s going to become irrelevant.”

According to a Euronews poll, Italy would be the most likely of the “Big Four” member states to consider exiting the EU if Brexit proves to be beneficial to Britain.

Data from the Redfield and Wilton Strategies survey found that nearly half of Italians would be likely to support their country leaving the EU if the UK and its economy is in good health in five years.

In the event, France and Spain both showed moderate support for changing their relationship with the bloc.

Germany was the member state least likely of the four major players to consider breaking away from Brussels.

Charles-Henri Gallois, President of French political movement Generation Frexit, said he is in favour of leaving the bloc as they tried to “bully and punish” the UK.

He told Express.co.uk: “I think that Boris has done what you have to do in negotiations with the EU.

“The EU does not negotiate in good faith.

“They don’t like a win-win relationship.

“They tried to bully and punish the UK as they fear a successful Brexit that will give ideas for other countries such as France, to leave the bloc.

“I’m in favour of Brexit because I hate the EU but I love Europe.

“I have many British friends, some of them within the Brexit Party, and it’s great to see them take back control.

“The EU will be great for European countries. Brexit and a successful Brexit are the key to help the continent to be free.”
