Manchester Mayor Andy Burham has demanded pensioners hand over ten percent of their assets or savings to HMRC to cover the cost of social care. Mr Burham told BBC Breakfast that Boris Johnson’s plan to hike up national insurance contributions for those aged under 65 was not the way to go to fix spiralling social care costs. Instead, the Labour mayor demanded that Keir Starmer begin pushing for a national care service on the scale of the NHS. 

“I don’t personally believe this is the right plan, to ask younger people saddled with student debt, low paid people to pay care bills.

“I know it is difficult but I don’t think that is the way to do it.”

He added: “My view, I said this when I was Health Secretary and I have never changed, provide social care on NHS terms through a national care service.

“And to do require all order people to pay a contribution, ten percent of their savings or their assets and that means we can abolish care charges.”
