The Government Minister was being pressed on calls for Nicola Sturgeon to resign when the fire bell rang out. Mr Downden was about to give his response to the latest Holyrood revelations when he was cut short by a “bing bong’ over his building’s tannoy. Alarmed, LBC host Nick Ferrari enquired whether the minister needed to make a dash to the nearest fire escape as the interview descended into chaos.

“Sorry, I think that’s a fire alarm,” the Culture Secretary said over the noise of the alarm.

To which the host replied with a chuckle: “Are you alright, do you need to evacuate the building, Mr Dowden?”

“I think it’s a routine fire test,” replied the minister.

“One of the perils of live broadcasting via Zoom.”

The interruption left both the guest and the host rather bemused as the questioning came to a comical end.

It comes as the Tory MP was scolded on GMB after referring to the programme as GMTV during the interview on the ITV show.

Kate Garraway and Charlotte Hawkins had welcomed Mr Dowden onto Good Morning Britain to discuss the ongoing row over the safety of the AstraZeneca vaccine and the European Union.

Mr Dowden said: “First of all it’s very important what we’ve heard, not just from the European Union Medicines Regulator but our own regulator.

GMB: Oliver Dowden refers to show as GMTV

“This vaccine is safe, you can have confidence in it, it’s good for you, it stops you getting the terrible disease and it’s good for the whole country because it helps stop the spread of the disease.

“The number one thing that people should look at if they have hesitancy is to look at the reliable news sources.

“Go to the BBC, the GMTV, see what they’re saying about it. Go to Gov.uk if you have concerns, you’ll see that they’re being addressed.

“The vast majority of people as the Chief Medical Officer said yesterday are still turning up taking their vaccine and they should take further confidence from the analysis that’s been taken,” he added.

“As I worked on both GMTV and Good Morning Britain I feel I should say to the Cultural Secretary it’s Good Morning Britain,” Garraway corrected. “But it’s lovely to know that you’ve watched us for that long.”

The Culture Secretary begged forgiveness for the gaffe and suggest the earlier fire alarm incident had thrown him off.

“It’s one of those mornings where the fire alarm has gone off and everything else so forgive me,” Mr Dowden replied.

“That’s right we’ve been around a long time that’s fine and will hopefully always will be,” Ms Garraway said.
