International travel has been banned since the start of January when the UK was plunged into fresh lockdowns due to a sharp rise in coronavirus cases.

But as part of Boris Johnson’s roadmap back to normality, international travel will no longer be illegal from May 17.

This afternoon ministers will publish its “green list” of countries where people can travel without requiring quarantine in return.

They will also publish a list of “amber” countries where 10 days of isolation at home must be completed and a “red list” of places Brits must continue to avoid.

Those returning from any red list country will be required to pay for 10 days of mandatory quarantine at an airport hotel.

It is expected the list of green countries will be relatively small to begin with.

Brits will be given the all clear to travel to just a handful of countries will low Covid rates or a high number of vaccinations.

The list of countries people can travel to will be reviewed every three weeks, with the number of holiday locations expected to grow as the international inoculation effort continues.
