Counter-terrorism expert Sam Armstrong has issued a strong warning on GB News over the Islamist terror threat facing the United Kingdom after Conservative MP Sir David Amess was killed last Friday in a suspected terrorism-related stabbing in Leigh-on-Sea in Essex. Police continue to question a 25-year-old man who was arrested at the scene of the attack and are looking at a possible motivation linked to Islamist extremism.

“This is a troubling time clearly in political life,” said GB News host.

“This isn’t the first time politicians have been attacked by terrorists, but particularly Islamist terrorists in this year in 2019 on parliament in 2017 on Parliament as well.”

He added: “This is a persistent problem.”

Mr Armstrong replied: “Yeah, there used to be this idea that Islamists didn’t really care who they targeted, they wanted to maximise the casualty count and weren’t bothered.

“Increasingly we’re seeing, that’s not the case.

“Stephen Timms of course the Labour MP in 2010 was attacked in his surgery by an Islamist attacker and thankfully failed to stab him to death.

“So look, these are people who are on the rise, on the march, they’ve got a target in mind,” claims Mr Armstrong.

“If we don’t do something about it. They are going to strike and as we saw last Friday, times tragically, They’ll be successful.”

Earlier on Monday, Good Morning Britain host Richard Madeley suggested to a counter-terrorism expert that was nothing stopping a potential terrorist from cheating the Government deradicalisation programme Prevent.

Mr Madeley raised the case of the London Bridge attacker Usman Khan.

Mr Khan attacked and killed Cambridge students Jack Merritt, 25, and Saskia Jones, 23, and wounded five others on 29 November last year before being shot dead by armed police. 

Mr Madeley told the counter-terrorism expert Chris Phillips: “There is nothing to stop a radicalised person from pretending that they’ve been put straight, which is exactly what happened with Usman Khan because he convinced everybody on the course that he was okay that he was back to normal, he was de-radicalized and he was safe to be out and about, and he took the first opportunity he could to commit murder.”

The GMB host asked: “So there’s is nothing to stop these people sent on these courses, pretending is there?

Mr Phillips replied: “No, absolutely and we see it in prisons as well in order to get released and in fact, he was released from prison, because he managed to persuade the parole board that he was suitable.

“So you’re quite right, and we’re playing a very risky game by releasing people that are hardened terrorists back into society.”

Prime Minister Boris Johnson is to lead tributes in the Commons to Sir David later on Monday before MPs and peers attend a service in his honour nearby at St Margaret’s Church.
