More than 24,700 people have arrived in the UK so far this year after making the Channel crossing in small boats – almost three times the number there were in 2020. It is thought at least 10 migrants have died in the last few weeks while trying to make the dangerous crossing. Trevor Phillips grilled Sajid Javid on whether he would have “tolerated” the numbers when he was Home Secretary.
He asked: “The words take back control echo in my head and it seems to me that the last thing that’s happened is we’ve taken back any control.
“In fact we’ve handed it over to the people smugglers. Would you have tolerated this number crossing the Channel when you were Home Secretary?”
Mr Javid replied: “No one would tolerate this number. The Home Secretary is doing a huge amount of work in order to break this business model.”
