A -10C ‘Beast from the North’ will make UK colder than Siberia
Gritters are back on duty as a six inch-deep blizzard is set to make the end of March the coldest for 200 years.
Weather Outlook forecaster Brian Gaze warned: “A late season wintry blast has up to 15cm of snow possible over high ground in northern England and Scotland, with some computer models suggesting several centimetres even in the South East.
“Temperatures look like dropping as low as -6C in England and -10C in Scotland’s valleys.”
The five-day, 1,000 mile-wide polar blast, starting on Wednesday, will plunge Britain into colder temperatures than the -2C lows in Omsk, Siberia.
A Met Office forecaster added: “The clocks have gone forward but seasons have taken a step back.
“Rain and hill snow will move southwards today.
“It will be distinctly cold in the North, with heavy snow showers and a risk of ice in Scotland.”
They added that tomorrow will be freezing for the whole nation, with rain, sleet and snow staying for Friday.
English and Scottish councils have reportedly readied salt-spreading trucks.
Advanced weather modelling maps from WX Charts also expect snow to make landfall on Wednesday, moving southward to cover the whole country by the end of Thursday.
The snow front will even reach south east and south central England, where one or two centimetres will remain on the ground into Friday.
In response to the new predictions of a return of flakes, a leading high street bookmakers have reduced odds of a 'whiteout' next month down to 2-1.
Alex Apati, a spokesperson for Ladbrokes, told the Express : "Brits may have been treated to a scorching few days but we're strapping ourselves in for the potential of April snow with temperatures heading in the wrong direction at the back end of this month."
The coldest temperature ever recorded in March in the UK was a chilly -22.8, recorded at Logie Coldstone in Aberdeenshire on 14 March 1958.
