Animal rights lawyer sentenced to 10 years in murder-for-hire scheme
Evergreen native Jennifer Emmi was sentenced to 10 years in prison on Monday after scheming a murder-for-hire plot.
Emmi, 43, also known as Jennifer Edwards, pleaded guilty to nine felony charges for three separate cases dating back to January 2020.
Emmi, a popular animal rights lawyer, attempted to hire a ranch hand to kill her estranged husband and his girlfriend, who had been the family’s au pair. She tried to hire a former sniper as part of a year filled with harassment, stalking and threats.
“The defendant poses a threat to the health and safety of our community and caused significant trauma to the victims of her crimes,” said Senior Deputy District Attorney Kate Knowles. “The court’s sentence ensures that they can move on with their lives without fearing for them.”
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office conducted a six-month investigation that involved undercover meetings, blackmail and extortion attempts.
Emmi pleaded guilty to the following crimes:
- Solicitation of murder in the second degree;
- Retaliation against a witness or victim;
- Stalking – threat – communicate – protection order violation;
- Attempt to influence a public servant;
- Violation of bail bond conditions – felony;
- Felony menacing – real/simulated weapon;
- Child abuse – knowingly/reckless – no injury;
- Child abuse – knowingly/reckless – no injury;
- Assault in the second degree – strangulation – heat of passion.
