Another 80 migrants arrive in the UK after being escorted across Channel by French vessel as people traffickers take advantage of good weather to step up their deadly trade

Another 80 migrants were spotted arriving into the UK today after being escorted across the Channel by a French vessel – as people traffickers took advantage of the good weather to step up their deadly trade.

The group of illegal immigrants, which included young children, were pictured being escorted into Dover by UK Border Force after attempting to make the treacherous journey.

As Britons basked in the sun today, with temperatures up at 28C, migrants made the most of the calmer sea conditions to cross the Channel.

They were pictured wearing life jackets as several security personnel in yellow hi-vis jackets escorted them into the Dover Marina.

The latest group of migrants to make the journey comes after the total number of arrivals so far this year passed 10,000 yesterday.

‘Almost 100’ illegal immigrants were escorted by UK Border Force officials into the Kent port yesterday, a witness said, taking this year’s provisional total to 10,188. This is now thought to be higher.

The numbers are slightly down on the same period last year, which saw a record-breaking total of 45,755 crossings throughout 2022.

Last weekend, 707 people were detected making the treacherous crossing from France in 14 boats, the Ministry of Defence said.

However, poor weather at the start of the week saw the numbers arriving into the UK dip slightly, with only 46 people making the journey on Monday and none on Tuesday.

But with the Met Office predicting dry and warm conditions into the weekend, the number of crossings is likely to pick up again.

It comes after it was revealed that the Home Office and French government are to join forces to launch a surveillance plane which will fly over the English Channel 24/7 to catch people smugglers.

The move, designed to cut the overall numbers of migrants and vulnerable asylum seekers from crossing the Channel on small boats, is being seen as the ‘final piece in the puzzle’ to cut crossings.

The news comes after the French Interior Minister told RFI last week: ‘We are guarding the border for the British people. Therefore you would expect to receive thanks rather than complaints.’

Meanwhile, it emerged last night that defending the Government’s Rwanda asylum deal against legal challenges has already cost the British taxpayer more than £1million.

Figures released by immigration minister Robert Jenrick showed £1.3 million has been spent on legal costs by the Home Office up to March this year.

The true figure will already be far higher, as the £1.3million sum does not include costs associated with a four-day hearing in the Court of Appeal at the end of April. 

Under the Rwanda scheme proposals, any adult who enters Britain illegally could be sent on a one-way ticket to the African country to have their asylum claim processed.
