Bloke who caught Covid watching England at Euros ‘wished he got jab’ on deathbed
A devastated family have revealed that the last words of a beloved family member who died of Covid was that he wished he'd got vaccinated when given the chance.
Glenn Barratt, 51, from Cleethorpes near Grimsby, died after battling the virus for three weeks.
His family say that they believe he contracted the killer bug while out watching England play against Croatia in Euro 2020 with pals last month.
They also revealed that Glenn had not taken the opportunity to be vaccinated and he told doctors and nurses "I wish I had" before passing away.
Ken Meech, a cousin, who regarded Glenn as a "big brother" urged everyone to get vaccinated.
"If he had, he would still be with us today," Ken told Grimsby Live.
Glenn had previously had his spleen removed following a motorcycle crash.
His cousin added: "Glenn had his worries and reasons for not having the jabs but he had no spleen and no immune system to help fight any infections but he did say to the nurses before going into an induced coma he wished he had."
Glenn had been watching England's Euro 2020 group game against Croatia on June 15 in a social club in Grimsby.
It is understood around seven people tested positive soon after the match, including a man in his 20s who also ended up in intensive care along with Glenn.
The establishment, The Old Clee Club, closed and underwent a deep clean but it is believed those affected had also mixed in other places.
Ken added: "I'm not a doom monger or someone who's telling you what you should do or not do. After all, we are suppose to live in a free world.
"But this is one of the saddest times of my life, losing my cousin, Big Glenn Barrett to Covid."
His friend, who had no underlying issues, is on the road to recovery after two spells on the same ward at Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital in Grimsby.
"There are those who say that Glenn, if he had had the jabs , would still be with us today. Being around my family and friends we believe his chances were much better if he had," Ken added.
Glenn's mum Lynn said: "He was a larger than life character and always enjoyed his food. He was a very good cook himself."
