Charles ‘could copy Meghan and Harry’s work as senior royals’ when he’s King

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s roles while they were still senior royals could be copied by Prince Charles when he becomes King, a royal biographer has claimed.

It has long-been rumoured that the Prince of Wales is eager to slim down the number of senior working royals in the Royal Family so as to give the taxpayer more “value for money”.

But this “slimming down” could prove tricky following the number of new patronages that have been handed down through the Royal Family following the death of Prince Philip.

Omid Scobie, who wrote the Sussexes’ biography Finding Freedom, believes Charles could instead strip the number of royal patronages down and to focus on “more impactful work”.

“We often talk about the slimmed down future for the Firm but we don’t often talk about how that will affect the workload,” he said on the Royally Obsessed podcast.

“The list of patronages that the Duke of Edinburgh has to his name is quite overwhelming to look at and I don’t think there is a system in place to properly distribute those to all Royal Family members or working royals.

“Because that covers a legacy of 65 years for the Duke so I think we’ll see many of them go into retirement.”

Omid used the examples of the Sussexes and Prince William and Kate Middleton for what the “new look” Royal Family could become.

“What we’ve seen from the Cambridges and even the Sussexes when they were working members of the Royal Family – that kind of lesser approach sees a lot more impactful work,” he continued.

“Harry and Meghan had a very small list of patronages between them but what they managed to do with those patronages was very impressive.

“And I think we’ve seen the Cambridges do very much the same with their’s, certainly as Kate continues with her early years work.”

The Harpers Bazaar royal editor went on to say that the “working model” of the Royal Family is changing, with “maybe less openings and unveilings and more focus on cause-driven initiatives”.

“If anything, that will be what shapes the Royal Family legacy,” he added.
