China is working on advanced brain warfare technology which is said to include devices that can send enemies to sleep and control their thoughts, according to an uncovered report.
Researchers have found two recent studies by China’s People’s Liberation Army that show the military is increasing its ‘hard power’ weapons with new technology to win wars without conventional weapons.
The biological weapons are designed to induce sleep, impair cognition and alertness as well as impact decision making, The Washington Times reports.
China is also said to be developing weapons that can be controlled directly by a soldier’s thoughts and can manipulate enemies.
Other weapons that the Chinese army is said to be working on includes ‘genetic drugs’ which are reportedly capable of altering genetic and physiological traits of people and seek to impair cognitive, emotional and behavioural characteristics.

The report, ‘Warfare in the Cognitive Age: NeuroStrike and the PLA’s Advanced Psychological Weapons and Tactics’, was published earlier this month by research group The CCP Biothreats Initiative.

‘The PLA is at the forefront of incorporating advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, brain-computer interfaces and novel biological weapons into its military strategies,’ researchers concluded.
Cognitive warfare devices include anti-sleep glasses that can increase alertness, while other weapons include ‘soft-kill radio waves’ which use electromagnetic energy to induce drowsiness on enemies, the report found.
‘In summary, the PLA’s integration of cutting-edge technologies such as AI, [brain-computer interfaces], and biological weapons into its military arsenal brings significant psychological dimensions to warfare, extending beyond their physical effects,’ the report said.
A Chinese army report from 2022 identified ‘five battles of cognition’ to shape future conflicts.
‘The objective is to create a powerful deterrent and asymmetric advantage,’ the report added.
Analysts found the research is being carried out by two Chinese military organisations, Unit 94969 and Unit 96812, which are developing defensive and offensive cognitive warfare.

It comes days after a declassified intelligence assessment found that China, Russia, Iran and Cuba all tried meddling in 2022 US congressional elections.
According to the report, there is strong evidence that China ‘approved efforts to try to influence a handful of midterm races’ involving candidates on both sides of the aisle.
It was likely part of a series of directives by Chinese Communist Party leaders to ‘intensify efforts to influence US policy and public opinion in China’s favor,’ which has been ongoing since 2020, the assessment noted.
China doubled down on its efforts to divide rival parties in the United States, but focused most intently on a few specific candidates, the assessment claimed.
