Chinese AI fighter pilots are now ‘better than humans’ in alarming tech leap
AI fighter pilots are becoming better than humans, as revealed by the results of recent military testing in China.
Aerial combat champion Fang Guoyu was recently 'shot down' by one of the artificially-piloted crafts during a simulated dogfight – but it's not the first test fight he's lost to the tech.
According to military-run PLA Daily: "This is not the first time the renowned Fang was shot down by the AI, and Fang is not the only ace the AI has defeated."
The country is currently in the midst of upgrading all areas of its military as tanks, missile systems, troop equipment and fighter jets have all been switched in recent years.
Among the new systems is the new J-20 stealth jets with advanced AI, which are currently only being used in training missions, according to the military.
Commanders are currently training the computers to defeat real-life combatants in an attempt to force the pilots to come up with new tactics to beat the machines.
Fang Guoyu said: "At first, it was not difficult to win against the AI. But by studying data, each engagement became a chance for it to improve."

In his most recent training session, Fang and his instructors used a tactical battle-plan to narrowly beat one of the machines.
However, in the following session, the machine had learned the tactics and used them to defeat Fang, the military said.
It is not clear whether China intends to deploy fully AI jets on the battlefield but a military spokesperson said the technology could be incorporated into jets flown by living pilots to assist during battles.
The news comes just weeks after Russian president, Vladimir Putin announced the development of his new stealthy naval vessels that can hide from enemy radars.
The Russian Navy began work on 'high-tech stealth ships' in May, installing a range of tools to try to shield their ships from detection.
