The victims were brothers Sammy and Davie McConaghie. Davie, 35, who confronted by the man on the pavement outside a Chinese takeaway beside the pub in his hometown.

The Sunday World reported that he was "challenged" by the man before attempting to run off when he brandished the large blade.

Unfortunately for Davie, he fell to the ground breaking his shoulder before the man set upon him, violently hacking at his upper half.

His brother Sammy, also 35, noticed the attack from inside the pub and ran to his brother's aid, yanking the assailant off Davie.

The frenzied knifeman then turned on him, hacking at his face and leaving a huge cut from his eyebrow to his mouth.
