A 43-year-old father from Louisiana in the US left a voice message to the police reporting his intentions of murder-suicide before his family were found dead with fatal gunshot wounds.

The father, Tim Ragas, called Jefferson Parish sheriff department’s 911 message system in the early hours of Thursday morning warning of what the police would discover.

According to Sheriff Joe Lopinto, Ragas said: “We can’t continue to live like this. You’ll find four bodies when you get here.”

Upon hearing the message, police were dispatched to the family’s home in Harvey, Louisiana where they found the bodies of Ragas, alongside Joanna Ragas, 45. Their sons Eric Thorneblom, 20, Timothy Ragas, 13, who had special needs were also found dead in the property.

At a press conference, Lopinto confirmed that the family had died from gunshot wounds, but was uncertain how many shooters were involved in the murder-suicide.

“Some of the information could make me believe that maybe they decided to do this together from the parents – the mother and father.

"But I’m going to let the coroner’s office make that determination."

Tim Ragas’ call to the Sheriff’s office has raised questions over why the man contacted the answering machine of the local Jefferson Parish law enforcement agency, rather than 911.

Sheriff Lopinto also confirmed that Ragas had previously been employed as a law enforcement officer, but not in recent years.

He did not confirm where Ragas’ employment was carried out but clarified that it was not in Jefferson Parish.

WWL is reporting that officials found a note and weapons convincing them that the family died in an intended murder-suicide. However this is yet to be publicly confirmed.
