Dead horse kills owner after crushing ribs while owner tried to bury beloved pet

A 58-year-old man was crushed to death by his own horse while he tried to bury the animal. Emergency services rushed to a commune on the outskirts of Rennes, Brittany, to save the man whose horse fell on him at around 11.00 am on Monday (12 June). Medics sadly failed to resuscitate him.

The man had been illegally trying to bury his horse on the land of a private golf club, Golf de la Freslonniere in Le Rheu.

His horse had died just a few days earlier.

Although many details have not been clarified, local media report that the man used a backhoe to transport his corpse down a small road.

He reportedly prepared to dig a pit in an embankment bordering a road at the club.

The horse’s corpse then appeared to fall on him, crushing part of his rib cage, according to Ouest-France.

It is unclear what the sequence of events was leading up to his death.

His body was discovered by his family who alerted the emergency services.

Moments later, ten firefighters from the Beauregard emergency department in Rennes and the ambulance service arrived on the scene, joined by the gendarmes.

When they arrived, the man had already suffered from cardiopulmonary arrest – a condition when the heart and lungs stop working, resulting in death.

He was pronounced dead on the scene.

Chateau du Golf de la Freslonniere in Le Rheu is a 17th-century castle surrounded by 140 hectares of private land, including a golf course.

Local media reports that his planned burial was illegal and that he should have contacted a specialist equine cremation service.
