Drunk wedding usher ‘arguing with ex’ ended footballer’s career in car smash

A drunk wedding usher managed to destroy a teenager’s promising dreams of a career in football after leaving him with a fractured pelvis in a horror smash.

John Mumby, 25, lost control of the car he was driving after being forced to leave a wedding because he had been arguing with his ex – who was a bridesmaid.

The collision, in Derby, saw the vehicle collide head-on into another car, with "chilling" consequences.

The impact left all four of the other occupants, a woman, her son and his two friends, needing to be freed from their car by the emergency services, reports DerbyshireLive.

One 15-year-old passenger suffered a fractured pelvis which has currently quashed a promising football and cricket career.

Mumby, a driver for a charity, had been swerving the vehicle as he drove along Little Eaton – and was found to be almost three times the legal limit.

He has now been jailed for 18 months.

During his court hearing, Sarah Slater, prosecuting, said the incident happened on the evening of September 17, 2019.

She said Mumby was seen swerving across lanes and mounting a pavement before coming to a stop at Cockpit Island.

Miss Slater said one driver lost sight of him close to the BBC Radio Derby building, but called his concerns through to the police.

She said 30 minutes later the woman in the other car had picked up her son and his friends and was heading the road when the Mumby’s Suzuki swerved into her path and struck her head on.

Miss Slater said: “She said he appeared to have lost control then she described a frightening thud which sent her car around 180 degrees and into a verge.

“The emergency services arrived and had to free them all because of the damage and their injuries.”

The mother said she now feels “on edge” when she drives and in the months after the crash was not able to follow her passionate love of swimming.

Miss Slater said the schoolboy who suffered the broken pelvis was a highly-rated footballer and cricketer who says he now no longer has the strength or fitness to play at the high standards he did before the smash.

Matthew Smith, mitigating, said: “He had been invited to that wedding where he was an usher and he had been a reluctant guest as one of the bridesmaids was his ex-partner.

“There had been an acrimonious split and on the day he started to drink, there was an argument and he was asked to leave.

“He is devastated at his thoughtlessness, it was a reckless decision to drive while in drink.”

Mumby, who at the time of the crash lived in Machon Bank, Sheffield and is now of Bond Street, Wakefield, pleaded guilty to two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

He has already been fined for refusing to provide a sample of breath for analysis.

As well as being sent to jail, he was disqualified from driving for two years and nine months.

Jailing him for 18 months, Recorder Stuart Sprawson said: “You were almost three times the drink-drive limit and I have no doubt you lost control of your vehicle because of the amount of alcohol you had consumed.

“I have seen the photos of the aftermath of the crash and they are chilling."
