First female Secretary of State Madeleine Albright dies from cancer at the age of 84

Madeleine Albright, the first woman to be Secretary of State, died on Wednesday from cancer at age 84.

The mother of three served under President Bill Clinton from 1997 to 2001 and was a longtime diplomat.

Albright immigrated with her family to the United States in 1948 from Czechoslovakia to escape the Nazis and was also a member of the National Security Council. 

She pushed for NATO expansion eastward into the former Soviet bloc and helped lead the NATO bombing campaign in 1999 to halt ethnic cleansing in Kosovo.
