Family identifies driver killed in fatal high-speed Highland Square shopping center crash – The Denver Post
A driver killed in a Saturday afternoon crash in the Highland Square shopping area has been identified. Family members say Brad Brubaker died and his daughter was injured.
Denver police on Monday identified the man suspected of driving the other car, which T-boned Brubaker’s vehicle at a high speed after running a red light. Patrick Layden, 49, is being held for investigation of vehicular homicide but had not been formally charged with a crime as of Monday morning.
Brubaker is described as “an incredible father and a beloved member of the community,” according to a GoFundMe page set up for the family. “He could usually be found outside helping his kids catch roly-polies or playing a game of tag, or lending a helping hand to his neighbors. The family lives near the scene of the accident and is a mainstay of our community. Anyone living nearby has probably seen them at the neighborhood’s restaurants and farmers market or heard the kids giggling as they walk the family dog.”
“We are completely heartbroken and devastated about the loss of Brad Brubaker,” the family said in a statement. “Right now, we are focusing all of our energy on Brad’s daughter and her healing. Thank you to everyone in the community, first responders, and the hospital staff for all they have done to support our family. We are asking for privacy at this time so we can grieve and heal.”
Layden is said to have passed another car by crossing double yellow lane lines while traveling down West 32nd Avenue before entering the intersection and broadsiding the Subaru with Brubaker and his daughter inside, according to a probable cause statement from police.
According to the police, the force of the crash pushed the two cars into seven other vehicles parked at the intersection.
The probable cause statement did not indicate whether police believe Layden was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the crash.
