The terrorist who drove a van into people leaving a mosque may lose sight in one eye for the rest of his life after a brutal attack from a fellow inmate at HMP Full Sutton, a court heard.

Darren Osborne has been left with permanent damage to his right eye after being stabbed by convicted murderer Patrick Chandler in a reportedly "unprovoked" attack during their time on the prison's sports pitch.

A sharpened wooden tool was used by Chandler to stab Osborne in the head, arm and torso.

The attack was so vicious and violent that the tool snapped in his hand and got lodged in Osborne's forehead, Hull Live reports.

Osborne is currently service a sentence of 43-years for the horrific terrorist attack which killed one man, Makram Ali, and injured nine others in June 2017.

Hull Crown Court heard how 48-year-old Patrick Chandler launched the vicious attack on Osborne while serving two sentences for murder and attempted murder.

Chandler was given a life sentence for the murder of John Comer in Manningtree, Essex, in 2017 – later getting an extra 10 years added for attacking another inmate at a prison in Chelmsford.

But the attack on Osborne has now landed another extra eight years in jail, which means he has doubled his sentence for his behaviour.

A judge told him he would not be eligible for parole until 2056 – at which point he will be 83.

The prosecution said that Chandler’s attack left far-right extremist Osborne with “permanent damage” to his eye.

Judge McKone said Osborne had been left “very frightened of losing the sight in his right eye”.

She added that although he is expected to make a full recovery, he could need to use a glass eye in the future.

The assault also reportedly left him with permanent tissue damage to his arm.

"Understandably he has been affected – mentally and adversely – by your attack, and feels more vulnerable because of it," the judge said.

Chandler pleaded guilty to inflicting grievous bodily harm and having a sharpened instrument in prison at an earlier court hearing.

The offence was treated in the most serious category due to the extent of Osborne's injuries and the pre-meditated nature, which could have meant another life sentence.

But Kevin Blount, defending Chandler, said that a further life sentence behind bars would wipe away “any glimmer of hope” he had of being a free man.

After sentencing Chandler to a further eight years, Judge McKone said: “You clearly ruminate on perceived wrongs and then make a calculated decision to act violently, and that makes you very dangerous.”
