Ghoulish bench memorial to shotgun-toting killer Raoul Moat sparks Twitter anger

A bench dedicated to the memory of vicious killer Raoul Maot in a British tourist hotspot has caused outrage.

In July 2010, Moat killed one person and injured two others in a two-day shooting spree before going on the run for almost a week, with police hunting him down.

He then killed himself after a six-hour stand-off with armed police officers from Northumbria Police surrounding him.

The murderer's victims were his ex-girlfriend Samantha Stobbart and her new partner Chris Brown, who was also killed. He was blinded police officer David Rathband, who killed himself less than two years later.

A bench in his honour has now appeared in New Brighton, Merseyside.

The plaque, posted on Twitter, says: “In loving memory of Raoul Moat – 1973-2010. Taken too soon – D&A xx”

It is not known who exactly “D” and “A” are, and the Daily Star has contacted Wirral Council for comment on the strange dedication.

The person who posted the image confirmed that the bench was near the New Brighton fair.

One user on Twitter wrote: “Surely not this has got to be some sick joke and not actually someone trying to be compassionate.”

While another said: “This has gotta be the result of a twisted sense of humour.”

The tweet has been liked nearly 10,000 times, with around 650 retweets after going viral last night (July 17).

PC Rathband was finishing his shift when he was shot twice by the shotgun-wielding maniac.

He lost sight in both eyes after the terrifying ordeal, and poured himself into starting the Blue Lamp Foundation to help injured 999 workers, becoming a national hero.

However, the trauma he faced, combined with his marriage falling apart, resulted in devastating consequences.

The 44-year-old father-of Ash and Mia killed himself at his home in Blyth, Northumberland in February 2012.
