Girl, 16, brutally stabbed and beaten to death in sick murder as attack ignored

A 20-year-old man is under arrest after widely circulated footage showed a 16-year-old girl being savagely beaten and stabbed to death in India. The sickening and heavily blurred clip – while Express.co.uk has chosen not to share – shows a man in a blue t-shirt launching a frenzied attack on the girl on the streets of Delhi, while others simply walk past, apparently unconcerned.

At one point he is seen bludgeoning her over the head with a large stone.

A post-mortem examination subsequently indicated the teenager had been stabbed 16 times, and suffered a fractured skull.

The clip has triggered public outrage, not just over the girl’s brutal killing, but as a result of the apparent indifference of those people who failed to intervene.

Police believe the pair were a couple who had argued shortly before the horrific incident, ANI news agency reported.

Senior police official Ravi Kumar Singh said she had been planning to attend a friend’s son’s birthday party when she was targeted.

Mr Singh named the suspect as Sahil, whom he said was arrested near the Bulandshahr district in neighbouring Uttar Pradesh.

In a tweet, Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal said: “A minor girl was brutally killed in broad daylight. It is sad and unfortunate. There is no fear among the criminals.”

Indian politician Atishi Singh tweeted: “Hon’ble @LtGovDelhi finds time to send press releases and ‘source based news’ against @ArvindKejriwal every day. But there is radio silence over the brutal murder of a teenager girl on the streets of Delhi.

“Has Hon’ble @LtGovDelhi forgotten that the Constitution has given him the responsibility for law and order in Delhi?”

Rekha Sharma, chairwoman of the of the National Commission for Women Rekha Sharma claimed the crime showed the “insensitivity” of the people of Delhi.

She told the BBC: “There were several people at the spot when the incident took place but no one took any action to help the girl.

“The case should be heard in a fast-track court and the verdict should come as early as possible.”

In 2012, there was a massive outcry after the gang rape of a 23-year-old physiotherapy student on a bus, also in Delhi. She subsequently died in hospital.

Her male friend, who was brutally beaten but survived, says nobody stopped for 25 minutes as they lay badly injured by the side of the road where they were dumped.
