Gran savaged to death by son’s ‘very powerful’ dog found ‘in pool of blood’

A grandmother killed in a savage dog attack is believed to have been attempting to break up a fight between two American bulldogs.

Ann Dunn was found unconscious at her Liverpool home after sustaining “catastrophic injuries” on October 3, 2022.

Today (Tuesday), an inquest hearing heard how the 65-year-old was at home with a total of seven dogs at the time.

Senior coroner for Liverpool and Wirral Andre Rebello told the inquest it was likely Ann attempted to separate two of the dogs from fighting when one of them turned on her.

She said: “She was looking after family dogs at her home. More likely than not she separated two dogs from fighting, securing one in the kitchen.

“The other dog has then attacked her, causing severe, fatal injuries.”

Ann had been due to collect her grandchild from school that afternoon but when she failed to show up concerned family members went to her home.

She was found face down, with bite marks visible on parts of her body, and laying in a pool of blood.

Mr Rebello added: “They've looked through the letterbox and saw Ann lying in the hallway, unresponsive and she was in a pool of blood with blood on her body.

“Ann was face-down and covered by a blood-soaked towel. Both her arms were showing evidence of bite marks, along with her legs.”

According to police reports, there were five adult American bulldogs at the property, which belonged to Ann’s son Stephen.

There was also a Jack Russell crossbreed and a 10-week labrador puppy at the home.

Bulldog Cairo was found shut inside the kitchen while another bulldog named Bronx, was wandering loose in the garden.

The other three bulldogs, named Texas, Rogue and Panther, were found in the garden in either a cage or the shed.

Two other dogs, a Jack Russell cross called Biggie and a Labrador puppy called Windy, were also found in cages in the dining room.

Emergency services were called to the property but Ann was tragically pronounced dead at the scene shortly after 4.30 pm.

Her son, Stephen Dunn, told the court that the dogs had not been violent towards humans before, although about eight months before his mother's death two of the adult males, Cairo and Bronx, began fighting with each other and he was injured while trying to separate them.

He had advised his mum to keep the dogs separated.

After the incident, Stephen agreed to sign over the five adult bulldogs to police and they were euthanised, Mr Rebello said.

Following advice from the Crown Prosecution Service, no further action was taken against Ann's son.

A post-mortem found Ann's cause of death was multiple dog bite injuries, the inquest heard.
