Grieving family told they have wrong body just before cremating convict’s corpse

A grieving family who were preparing to send what they thought was their son's body in for cremation were told they had the wrong corpse.

In fact, they were told their son was alive and well, instead receiving the body of his cellmate and very nearly giving him an impromptu send-off.

Chantren, 45, the father of the unnamed inmate who did not disclose why his son was in prison, had said they caught word of the apparent death on Friday (March 3).

The unnamed son, locked up in Sungai Buloh Prison in Malaysia, was alive and well and it turned out his prison bunk buddy had died instead.

Prison department officials called the family to explain the mix-up just moments before the body of the unnamed, unrelated prisoner was cremated.

Chantren said his family had been refused a viewing of the body, and had to return to hospital a day after confirming that their son had died to view the body, NewStraitsTimes reported.

The family were puzzled at the time as "there were surgical marks and stitches" on the head of the body, which looked nothing like their son, but they still took the corpse home to prepare.

Chantren explained: "The whole family was grieving and making preparations. Today, as we were about to cremate the body at the crematorium, we received a phone call from the Prisons Department.

"They told us that we had the wrong body. The body was instead of his cell mate, who had died of lung failure. They said our son was still alive, and immediately asked us to do a video call.

"Our son was arrested by police, we were told he had died, only to still be alive. This is all very confusing."

The boy's mother, who asked to be known as Parameiswary, added: "This is not a small matter, it's literally a matter of life and death."

Parameiswary, 48, and Chantren have since said the now cancelled cremation cost them £3,700 (RM20,000).
