Gulp! Hungry pike swallows live fish whole in stomach-churning video

  • Footage shows pike gobbling a rudd whole in Budel, Netherlands
  • The live fish starts lengthways in the jaws of the pike and wriggles and flaps
  • Pike then puffs in and out as it prepares to swallow the rudd in its entirety

This is the stomach-churning moment a pike attacked another fish and swallowed it whole.

Footage filmed in Budel, Netherlands, and recently shared online, shows the pike holding another fish in its jaws.

The unfortunate fish appears to be still alive as its fins and tail can be seen moving as the carnivorous fish turns it round to swallow it head first.

Footage starts with the smaller fish, identified by the filmer as a rudd, being held lengthways in the jaws of the pike.

The pike chomps its jaws down on the head of the copper-coloured fish.

The fish wiggles as the pike continues to attack and prepares to eat the rest.

It chews on the fish, holding it in its mouth while it puffs in and out.

Eventually, only the very end of the fish is visible while the pike finishes chewing the rudd in footage filmed on November 22, 2020.

A pike is a large fish that can grow over a metre in length and is found in lakes and slow-flowing rivers.

It is also found in canals that have lots of vegetation and uses plants to hide when hunting.

Pikes burst out with remarkable speed to catch fish, frogs, small mammals or ducklings.

Proving that no fish is too big for a pike to eat, another was found with a large one in its stomach last year.

On New Year’s Day in 2020, three fishermen discovered they had caught more than expected after they found a northern pike.

The fishermen, Roger, Andy and Jeremiah, landed the large fish from the Mississippi in Lacrosse, Wisconsin and decided to fillet it.

When they sliced the pike’s flesh, one of the men noticed it start to move.

The trio were amazed as they thought the pike had eaten a turtle so could not believe their eyes when they saw a perch slide out.

Even though the perch had been gobbled by the pike it was still alive and began flapping on the table.

The pike, which had swallowed the perch whole, must still have been hungry after it grabbed the line.
