A MAN was so desperate not to catch the coronavirus he locked his wife in the bathroom over fears she had caught the deadly disease.

The Lithuanian woman had to phone police for help after her germaphobic husband held her captive.

The man decided to force his wife into quarantine in their apartment in Vilnius, Lithuania after discovering she had met a Chinese woman who had traveled to Italy which has been worst-hit by the coronavirus in Europe.

He claimed to have been acting on the advice of medics when he locked her in the bathroom.

According to the Mirror, police said he had been "consulting on the phone with doctors" on how to avoid infection.

As a precaution, the woman was tested for COVID-19 and was found to be clear of the deadly disease.

Despite being held captive by her over-cautious husband, the woman declined to press charges.

Lithuania's health ministry confirmed the country's first reported case of coronavirus on Friday.

The virus first appeared in Wuhan, China in December last year but the deadly disease has spread across the globe with cases in the US, South America, Australia and the Middle East.

Italy's has 2,036 confirmed cases of the coronavirus while 52 people have died from the disease.

The region of Lombardy had been hit the worst with 38 deaths, while there are also cases near Milan and Veneto near Venice.

Today the NHS declared its highest level emergency as the number of coronavirus cases hit 51.

The news comes hours after Prime Minister Boris Johnson revealed his "battle plan" to kill of the deadly bug in the UK.

Services could be reduced as part of the NHS battle plan.

Band of England governor Mark Carney warned that the economic shock from the virus could "prove large".
