A judge has slammed a cannabis-smoking gangster who blasted an innocent university with a shotgun and stabbed him to death as a ‘very dangerous person’.

Russell Jordan Jones, 23, was ‘in the wrong place at the wrong time’ when he was murdered outside a parade of shops in South Street, Enfield, north London, on March 17, 2018.

Gang member Sherome Williams, 21, had been with a group looking for rivals to attack when they found Mr Jones, who was not a member of any gang. Williams has been jailed for life.

Mr Jones, who was studying at the University of Hertfordshire, was stabbed in the face and neck as well as suffering 10 knife wounds to his back and being shot with a 12-bore shotgun. He died at the scene after losing a huge amount of blood.

Karun Singh, a friend of Mr Jones, was also stabbed in the back and seriously injured during the same attack.

Williams, who was only 16 when he killed Mr Jones, was jailed for life with a minimum term of 25 years for murder, grievous bodily harm and possession of a firearm.

Bilkan Bilkaner and Duke Quainoo, both 20 at the time, were each jailed for 29 years for the murder in 2019.

After the chilling murder Quainoo wrote the rap lyrics: ‘I bored up a p***y and bored up his friend. And one of them n****s turned ghost.’

Williams was previously jailed for 22 years for attempted murder after carrying out a similar attack in Tottenham on 6 January 2020.

The 26-year-old victim was driving down Lansdowne Road when a stolen black Mercedes rammed his vehicle.

He ran from the crash scene before being repeatedly stabbed by Williams and three other attackers.

Judge Anthony Leonard told Williams: ‘You are a very dangerous person and have been for years.

‘Your intention, alongside the others involved in this attack, was to kill.

‘I take account of the fact you had not yet reached majority but in terms of criminality you were experienced.’

Mr Jones’ mother Stephanie Saunders said in a victim impact statement read to court: ‘Russell was my only son, my daughter’s twin and my parent’s only grandson.

‘He was my strength, my protector, my voice of reason, but mostly my baby.

‘I will love and miss him till the day I die and I just hope one day we will meet again.

‘There are no words to fully explain how the last five years have changed and affected me and Tara, the love of his life with beautiful red hair who he was planning to spend his future with.

‘Our lives are shattered, our hearts broken and only a future of huge pain and loss lies ahead.

‘Russell was an extremely bright, intelligent, quick-witted, lovable young man with an endearing smile and his whole life ahead of him.’

Williams has smoked cannabis from the age of 12 and became a dealer to fund his £80 a day habit.

Mark Heywood, KC, prosecuting, earlier described it as a ‘sudden, violent and truly bloody attack’ that left one man dead and another seriously wounded.

He said: ‘In character, it was neither random nor spontaneous: the violence was deliberate and planned – the best indication being that it was done with a gun and knives, for the purpose of violence.

‘The violence was done by a team, operating together and driven there by another.

‘They came from the car, moved as one, sought out their victims and then attacked swiftly and brutally.

Mr Heywood added: ‘There was no apparent provocation for the attack, which effectively took the form of an ambush.

‘The evidence does not suggest that either Russell Jones or Karun Singh were particular individual targets of attack, but rather that the deadly violence was aimed at the group to the extent that they suffered really serious injuries.

‘It appears they were in the wrong place at the wrong time.’

Williams, of Edmonton denied but was convicted of murder, inflicting grievous bodily harm and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life.

He was sentenced to detention at His Majesty’s Pleasure, or life imprisonment, with a minimum term of 25 years, concurrent to the 22 year sentence he is already serving.

Bus driver Kallum Martin, 25, who ferried the murderers to the scene in his Mercedes A Class, was cleared of murder and manslaughter in 2019 after insisting he had no idea what the others had planned.

He was left cowering in the dock moments after the verdicts were returned when Bilkaner and Quainoo leapt on him and rained down a barrage of punches.
