McDonald’s customers say they have been put off the fast-food chain ‘for life’ over how the company responded to claims that staff refused to sell a mum food for a homeless man.

The mum, who asked to remain anonymous, visited the McDonalds on Great Homer Street in Liverpool on Friday evening (November 26).

She and her autistic son stopped at the drive-through during storm Arwen, and saw a homeless man standing there looking "absolutely frozen".

But when she went to buy him a meal to warm him up, she claims that staff refused to serve her.

A spokesman for McDonald’s told the Liverpool ECHO that they have "no policy in place restricting service to homeless people" but the staff made a decision on safety grounds.

The response sparked fierce backlash on social media as customers shared their disgust and fury.

Miranda-Chantel Holmes said: "Wow think this has put me of McDonald’s for life how can a fast-food company refuse someone who wants to buy food whether it’s for a homeless guy or not DISGUSTING!!!!"

Guy76 said: "Shame, someone trying to do a good deed. I hope the homeless man found somewhere to shelter that night."

Janice Rita Johnson said: "Shocking. Disgraceful behaviour by McDonald's staff. This branch should be boycotted."

Ashley Louise said: "It's usually the same people who will sit in the same spot by the drive-through window tucked away for shelter. They are always very quiet unless spoken to and never ask for anything unless offered."

Robert Lamb said: "Disgusting behaviour from the McDonald's staff, but he should have tried to get into a local YMCA or shelter to get out of the storm."

The mum explained that the homeless man was standing within sight of the drive-thru windows. She could see him shaking and 'soaked' from Storm Arwen.

The woman wound her window down and offered to get him something to eat but said he told her "not to worry" about him as he could see she had kids. However, she continued to insist and "persuaded him to agree".

He eventually requested a hot chocolate, warm apple pie and doughnut, repeatedly saying how much he appreciated her offer.

But when she got to the first drive-thru window and asked the McDonald's worker to add his items to her existing order, she was disgusted by the response.

The mum claimed: "As I got to the window I asked the girl if I could add his items onto what I ordered but she said 'sorry my manager said we’re not allowed to add on to your order'.

"I said 'excuse me?' and she replied the same again – that her manager had told her that she is not allowed to add anything on to my order.

"I told them I want what I am paying for and if I had to go through the drive-thru again then I would. I asked the girl to get the manager because now I was infuriated.

"The manager refused to come and see me and the young girl at the window kept apologising as it was her manager’s decision."

She claims that at this point the homeless man was crying and "begging" the girl behind the window to allow him to have the hot drink – even telling her to leave the food as it "didn’t matter".

The woman said the manager agreed to add the hot chocolate and the doughnut to the order but continued to refuse the apple pie.

"It’s absolutely disgusting and has played on my mind ever since," she said.
