Melania Trump admits why she wore ‘I don’t care’ coat to child detention centre
Melania Trump admitted she wore her infamous ‘I don’t care’ jacket to “drive the liberals crazy”, it has emerged.
The former First Lady claimed she donned the coat to stoke a reaction from her critics.
She sparked a fierce backlash after she wore it in June 2018 during a trip to a migrant child detention centre in Texas, US.
The $39 (£29) green coat from Zara, which had the words 'I really don't care, do u?' emblazoned in white on the back, caused huge speculation as to the message behind it.
A leaked recording, obtained by Hollywood Life, has now shed some light on why she chose to wear it.
In the audio clip, she was asked by her former friend Stephanie Winston Wolkoff what led her to buy the jacket.
Mrs Trump, 50, laughed as she replied: “I’m driving the liberals crazy, that’s for sure.
“That’s you know, that’s what everybody’s like, Oh my god, this is the worst. This is the worst. They are crazy.”
She also said she “had the idea myself” and insisted it had nothing to do with her stylist Hervé Pierre.
Melania Trump will stick by Donald without the 'lovey-dovey stuff – she wants stability'
Ms Winston Wolkoff claimed Mrs Trump wore the jacket as she believed she would only have been on the news for two minutes otherwise.
She added: “Melania is about attention, not intention, and that’s what people have to understand, and that’s what I had to come to learn.”
At the time, the New Hope Children's Shelter in McAllen, Texas housed 55 youngsters.

Some of the children had reportedly been separated from their parents as part of ex-US President Donald Trump’s zero-tolerance policy towards illegal immigration.
Mrs Trump wore the coat on her way to the centre and during her trip, but took it off before arriving at the site itself.
She later told ABC news she had put it on for her critics.
The Slovenian-American former model said: “I want to show them I don't care.
“You could criticise whatever you want to say. But it will not stop me to do what I feel is right."
