Mystery deepens after Brit tourist found dead lying face down in sewer
Cambodia: A look at Angkor Wat temple in Siem Reap
Cambodian police are trying to clarify the circumstances surrounding the death of a British man. Charlie Gray, 30, was discovered by locals at around 4pm on Thursday in a remote area in the Kampot province, around 90 miles from the capital Phnom Penh. Police arrived shortly afterwards. Mr Gray was officially pronounced dead at the scene, before being taken away for a post-mortem examination.
Officers believe the victim could have drowned after falling face down into the sewer.
However, they have not ruled out the possibility that his body was dumped there.
A local resident, Bong Chea, who was of those to discover Mr Gary’s body, said: “The man was dead when we found him.
“Somebody moved him to check if he was alive and try and wake him up.
“He was already dead. Nobody knows how he fell into the sewer.
“We also don’t know who the man was. We hardly see foreigners in this area.”
Mr Gray’s body is presently being kept at the Wat Teuk Thla temple in Phnom Penh, as police await the results of the post-mortem.
Lieutenant Colonel Seang said: “The autopsy results will show how the foreigner died.
“If they show there was foul play, yes, we will investigate this further.
“He could have fallen into the sewer and died. Yes, it’s possible he died somewhere else and his body was left at the sewer.”
An FCDO spokesperson said: “We are supporting the family of a British man who died in Cambodia, and are in touch with the local authorities.”
Mr Gray’s unexplained death may raise uncomfortable memories of a series of murders connected to Charles Sobhraj in South Asia during the 1970s.
The serial killer and fraudster preyed on Western tourists travelling on the hippie trail.
He is believed to have killed at least 20 people, and a TV series was made about his exploits, called “The Serpent”.

Mr Sobhraj was convicted and jailed in India from 1976 to 1997. After his release he returned to France.
He then went to Nepal in 2003, where he was re-arrested, tried, and given a life sentence.
On 21 December 2022, the Supreme Court of Nepal ordered his release from prison because of his old age, after he had served 19 years of his life term.
