Weatherman John Hammond has slapped down rumours that Britons can expect a spell of scorching sun this September. He warned that temperatures will likely remain in the teens for most parts of the country. Mr Hammand did add that temperatures in Northern Ireland and western Scotland had a chance to reach mid-twenties at best. He told GB News confidentially “I can categorically say there are no indications of a heatwave on the way.”

Mr Hammond told GB News: “The breaking news is that there is no heatwave on the way.

“The gloom which currently pervades the United Kingdom is set to continue for the next several days.

“In fact, picture the scene, yesterday I was at a BBQ with another weatherman and there we were sat outside with our shorts.

“As the drizzle gentle fell from heaven we were comparing our isobars.

“I am aware of a slightly fabricated story in one of the papers in which quotes have been taken out of context to kind of conjure up a piece that suggests a heatwave is on the way.

“And I can categorically say there are no indications of a heatwave on the way.

“In the best of the sunshine, and there ain’t much sunshine out there at all, but in the best of the sunshine over the next few days across Northern Ireland and western Scotland we might get up into the low twenties.

“Mid-twenties might be pushing it but for most of us it is the teens at best.”

BBC Weather: Carol Kirkwood forecasts drop in temperatures

It comes as BBC Weather meteorologist Carol Kirkwood warns temperatures are struggling to rise amid a cold breeze sweeping across the UK.

She told BBC Breakfast on Tuesday: “There will be some sunshine but for most of us it’s going to be cloudy and once again, there’ll be some patchy light rain or indeed some drizzle, especially but not exclusively, in the east.

“And it’s in the east we’ve got that chilly breeze coming in from the North Sea as well as through the English Channel.

“The best chance of seeing some outbreaks today are across parts of southeast England.

“You can see a lot of cloud for the rest of England and also most of Wales.”

Ms Kirkwood added: “One or two breaks across some parts of northwest England but more so across Northern Ireland, and western and central Scotland.

“Temperatures today are up to about 20C at best in the sunshine, but we’re looking at a range of about 13C to 18C.

“Through this evening and overnight, we see a return to a lot of cloud, some breaks particularly across central Scotland, where temperatures could fall away two to three degrees and breezy down the North Sea coastline, breezy through the English Channel, and the coasts of Devon and Cornwall.”
