Prince William recalls funny moment young boy told Philip to ‘jog on, grandpa’
Prince William revealed Prince Philip's response to the hilarious moment a young boy reacted rudely to the late Duke of Edinburgh and his reaction.
The Duke of Cambridge, who will celebrate his 40th birthday on Tuesday (June 21), opened up about the incident on a BBC programme honouring his grandfather after he died on April 9 last year.
The story goes that the two royals were driving around the Queen's Balmoral estate in Scotland when they came across two young boys.
Funnily enough, the two lads were completing the hike as part of the Duke of Edinburgh Award when the rude comment was made, reports the Mirror.
William said: "[Philip] stopped and wound down his window and said, 'Good morning. How are you getting on?'
"To which the smallest young chap at the back turned round and effectively said, 'Jog on grandpa!'"
The 39-year-old royal admitted the reply was blunter than that, but his grandfather found it hilarious.
After the boy's cheeky response, Philip wound the car window up before turning to his grandson and saying: "The youth of today!"
William discussed the funny exchange on the BBC's Prince Philip: The Royal Family Remembers.
The programme saw Philip's children – Princes Charles, Edward and Andrew, and Princess Anne – share their personal recollections of their father, as did his grandchildren William and Prince Harry.
Charles revealed his final conversation the day before he died.
The Duke of Cornwall said they were discussing plans to celebrate his 100th birthday.
He called his father at Windsor on April 8 and asked about celebrating the centenary in June.
Charles said: "We're talking about your birthday."
Philip's failing hearing forced Charles to speak up and repeated a bit more loudly: "We're talking about your birthday, and whether there's going to be reception!"
Philip replied: "Well, I've got to be alive for it, haven't I?"
Charles replied: "I knew you'd say that!"
Harry described his grandfather as "unapologetically him" and praised his support for the Queen.
He said: "From my grandmother's perspective, to have someone like that on your shoulder for 73 years of marriage – it doesn't get better than that."
